Suggested Reading: Best American Mystery Stories, 2004
I finished it yesterday. I've never thought of myself as a mystery fan, but I had to read each of the twenty stories in one sitting because they were so dang good. It turns out that my Sherlock Holmes-esque idea of the mystery story was plain wrong in most cases.
The best of the best were (in my opinion):
Height Advantage by William J. Carroll
All Through the House by Christopher Coake
Low Tide by Dick Lochte
Doll: A Romance of the Mississippi by Joyce Carol Oates (yep, she's still writing)
Best Man Wins by Frederick Waterman
And, if you like or at least are aware of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes approach, you'll get a kick out of:
The Incident of the Impecunious Chevalier by Richard A. Lupoff
